Key facts

Depending on the product, a Business Analyst might need to deliver a variety of technical outputs related to data, integration, modeling etc.

Description

Some very basic programming skills and a technical background will be helpful, because a Business Analyst spends a lot of time communicating with technical people . Very often, a Business Analyst has to extract, process and analyze data. However, sometimes the only way to access data is to address the database directly via SQL. So, a BA should have a basic understanding of relational databases, as well as be able to write basic CRUD queries. Spreadsheet (e.g. excel) is the most common way of processing and analyzing data. There are different levels of excel users: formulas, functions, native data analytic tools (advanced filtering, pivot tables / charts, goalseeker etc.), recorded macros and eventually – the custom macros written in VBA. Being able to read, understand and prepare respective documentation is often done by a BA.
